Goa
Goa lies on the Arabian Sea along with slopes of the Western Ghats - the Sahydari range. Its seven rivers - Tricol, Chapora, Mandovi, Zuari, Sal, Talpona and Galibaga - which area navigable throughout the year flow from these ranges along the vast paddy fields and coconut and cashew plantations. They flow west towards the Arabian Sea - 60 km away - breaking the long coastline with enchanting estuaries and bays which mark off idyllic palm-fringed beaches like Aranbol, Vegator, Anjuna, Baga, Calangute and Miramar in the north and Colva, Betul and Palolem in the south. Goa's 105-km-long coastline (with 40 beaches), is a delight for swimmers, anglers, water sports buffs, and sun-bathers. Goa has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Goa's high season is October - May and the low season June - September when it rains.

BEACHES
The most popular stretch of beaches in North Goa is the triumvirate of Sinquerim (Aguada beach), Calangute and Baga, forming a graceful are extending for 7 kms. The road that snakes behind the beaches contains hundreds of hotels, restaurants, shops selling souvenirs and travel agencies, marking this stretch the best developed infrastructurally.

North of this is Anjuna, guarded on either side of its length by a rocky promontory. Anjuna's old association with the flower children of the '70s still continues with oldtimers who spend their winters here amid rave parties and the weekly flea market. Further north are the much quieter beaches of Vagator and Chapora.

7 km from Panaji is the beach of Dona Paula overlooking Marmagoa harbour. This is where water scooters and motor boats are available on hire.

In the south, a 25 km span of beach extends from Velsao through Uttorda, Majorda, Colva, Benaulim, Fatrade to Cavellosim. Much quiter than the north Goa beaches, Cavellosim has a sprinkling of first class and luxury resorts along it. All the other beaches have private homes, which rent out rooms and simple restaurants.

Palolem in the extreme south, near Goa's border with Karnataka, is considered to be the best beach, with a backdrop of the Western Ghats their thickly-wooded hills offering trekking trails.

Churches
Old Goa, 10 kms east of Panaji is Old Goa - the prime tourist attraction of the state. It was built by Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur in the first decade of the sixteenth century to house his capital which he wanted to shift from Bijapur. But, Alfanso de Albuquerque made short work of it when he stormed it and took it over to make it the capital of the Portuguese possessions in India.


Basilica of Bom Jesus, dedicated to infant Jesus, is the most famous church in Goa. The mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier kept in a rich casket are enshrined here, An exposition takes place once in ten years attracting visitors from all parts of the world.

Se Cathedral, is the most imposing church in Goa - its vaulted interior overwhelms the visitors by its sheer grandeur. The church has five bells of which the Golden Bell is the most famous and the biggest in Goa. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine.

Church of our Lady of Rosary, is one of the earliest built churches in Goa. It bears an inscription about the reconquest of Goa by Alfanso de Albuquerque in 1510.

Rachol Seminary, is situated just off the banks of Mandovi River - 12 kms from Margao in south Goa. It used to be a Muslim fortress. In 1521, it passed into the hands of the Portuguese and was transformed into a Seminary. The Seminary imparts education in theology, A museum of Christian Arts is housed here.

How to Getting There:
By Airway: Goa (Dabolim Airport) is connected by Indian Airlines and Air India to Mumbai, Bangalore, Kochi, Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad. Private Airlines such as Jet Airways, Sahara India also operate flights to Goa.

By Railway: Vasco-de-Gama, 35 km away, is the nearest railhead. Vasco-da-Gama and Margoa are connected by train with Bangalore, Belgaum, Hospet, Hubli and Hyderabad and via Miraj to Mumbai, Delhi and Agra.

By Road: Panaji, the capital of Goa, is connected by road to Bangalore, Belgaum, Mumbai, Hospet, Kolhapur, Mangalore, Mysore, Pune etc.
